A pump pack of hand sanitiser

Nothing beats good old-fashioned hand washing as a way to avoid the spread of infections and diseases. With the current situation of Coronavirus (COVID-19), it is more important than ever to practice good personal hygiene. However, if soap and water aren't available then a hand sanitiser may be the next best thing.

DIY Hand Sanitiser

Ingredients

  • One bottle of methylated spirits
  • ¼ cup Aloe Vera gel (or fresh product)
  • Essential oils or lemon juice

Method

  • Dilute methylated spirits 70/30 with water. That is seven parts methylated spirits to three parts water
  • Combine 215ml (3/4 cup) of the diluted methylated spirits mix with 70ml (1/4 cup) of Aloe Vera gel (to counteract the harshness of the alcohol)
  • Add 10 drops of essential oil such as lavender oil, lemon oil or lemon juice
  • Mix well to blend
  • Pour the solution into a suitable container or re-use an empty and washed hand sanitiser containers and you’re ready to go

One of our colleagues here at IDEAS was unable to source aloe vera gel and was willing to try the real thing. She has kindly shared this process with us as filmed by her daughter. Remember to observe safe practices when using implements such as sharp knives.

A word of warning

This is a homemade product and so doesn’t have the expertise of being safely produced under official health guidelines. It is strictly a last resort option to be used in extreme situations when handwashing isn’t possible.

It is advised not to use this product on children’s skin or with people who have sensitive skin where its use may cause an allergic reaction or similar condition.
